The hottest September weekend on record did not deter the finalists taking to the green for the climax of our internal club competitions.
With temperatures reaching 30 degrees and most folks taking cover our intrepid competitors battled it out for the honours board of 2023. Those who turned out to spectate were well rewarded with a great show of bowls and close competitive games.
Once again it was refreshing to see new faces competing for the honours. Two new members and new to bowls Adrian Gunter and Dominic Singleton both reached the final of the Novice Cup to play each other with Dom the eventual victor. Adrian also made the final of the Men’s Singles narrowly losing out to Club Captain Paul Chuter in a great match. Paul also made the final of the Men’s Handicap winning 21-15 against Steve Hotston. Steve also lost the Mens Pairs partnered with Bob Butterfield against Andy Hiscock and Malcolm Hutchings who both had a really good game. Malcolm also took the honours in the Mens Seniors after a good tussle with Allan Ricketts.
The ladies put on a great show, our new Club ladies Champion is Carol Harkness who took a win over June Barnard knocking Catherine Dixon off the Honours board for the first time in 5 years. The ladies Handicap title was won this year by Anne Chuter against Stella Tait who put up a good show. Anne also won the Ladies Pairs with Angie Hotston against June and Pam Hiscock who is also one of our new players. Angie went on to win the mixed pairs partnered with Gerald Dixon over Corina Pearce and Bob Butterfield.
In all it was a great weekend of bowls that will also be remembered by the weather !

The 2023 Midhurst Cup Final this year was played between Crablands and Pagham with Crablands grabbing the Cup.
The final was played on a beautiful afternoon but quite hot and Crablands got into their stride early and strode away never to be caught.
A great afternoon of bowls and a good game for the spectators too, followed by a delicious BBQ tea.
Congratulations to Crabland.
What better way to celebrate our Queens Jubilee than lay on a fabulous tea following our Thursday afternoon roll-up. Annie did us proud with a delicious spread of sandwiches, sausage rolls and amazing cakes. Thanks also to Sarah for baking cakes, Pauline for the popular scones and Catherine, Corina, Dot and Di for helping with the preparation and running the bar.
The event proved very popular and £200 was raised as a donation to help fund Mark Bilsby who has been selected to represent England as a Director for Gareth Harwood (B4) at the International Blind Bowls Association World Championships in Australia in March 2023.
Back on the calendar and highly anticipated the MBC’s annual presentation dinner was well attended by members, family and friends who were treated to a wonderful evening of fabulous food, fun and the highlight of the event, the presentation of awards.
The awards were presented this year by Club Chairman Gerald Dixon and new Club Captain Malcolm Hutchings who has taken on the role from Gerald who held the position for fifteen years.
Following the main awards a few surprised and amused members were presented with the traditional nincompoop cryptic memento by Club Secretary Annie Chuter to recognise and capture their moment of foolishness or perhaps a bubblehead comment on the green. Always very amusing!

The event was well supported and members enjoyed a lavish evening of good food, plenty of banter and an impromptu and unrestrained cabaret performed by Richard, John and Gerald !
