2023 Club Presentation Night

A great night was had by all at our annual club presentation dinner held this year at the Selsey Arms, West Dean.

A wonderful atmosphere and good food helped to make the night a wonderful culmination of another successful bowling season.

The awards were presented to the Club Champions for 2023 by Chairman Malcolm Hutchings to a good spread of the playing members and a special award to Stella Tait and Jack Jurado for outstanding service and contribution to the club over many years.

The highlight of the Midhurst Bowling Club year surely has to be the ladies fours winning the Sussex County title and the trophy was presented to Catherine Dixon, Annie Chuter, Carol Harkness and Angie Hotston.

Congratulations to all the champions of 2023 and a big thank you to all who took part as we look forward to another year of sunshine and bowls at the Midhurst Bowling Club

Club Championship Finals 2023

The hottest September weekend on record did not deter the finalists taking to the green for the climax of our internal club competitions.

With temperatures reaching 30 degrees and most folks taking cover our intrepid competitors battled it out for the honours board of 2023. Those who turned out to spectate were well rewarded with a great show of bowls and close competitive games.

Once again it was refreshing to see new faces competing for the honours. Two new members and new to bowls Adrian Gunter and Dominic Singleton both reached the final of the Novice Cup to play each other with Dom the eventual victor. Adrian also made the final of the Men’s Singles narrowly losing out to Club Captain Paul Chuter in a great match. Paul also made the final of the Men’s Handicap winning 21-15 against Steve Hotston. Steve also lost the Mens Pairs partnered with Bob Butterfield against Andy Hiscock and Malcolm Hutchings who both had a really good game. Malcolm also took the honours in the Mens Seniors after a good tussle with Allan Ricketts.

The ladies put on a great show, our new Club ladies Champion is Carol Harkness who took a win over June Barnard knocking Catherine Dixon off the Honours board for the first time in 5 years. The ladies Handicap title was won this year by Anne Chuter against Stella Tait who put up a good show. Anne also won the Ladies Pairs with Angie Hotston against June and Pam Hiscock who is also one of our new players. Angie went on to win the mixed pairs partnered with Gerald Dixon over Corina Pearce and Bob Butterfield.

In all it was a great weekend of bowls that will also be remembered by the weather !

Congratulations to our MBC Ladies Fours team

Our ladies fours team of Catherine Dixon skip, Annie Chuter 3, Carol Harkness 2 and Angie Hotston lead were victorious in becoming the Sussex County Champions for 2023.

A huge accomplishment and one no other has achieved in the clubs long history.

We are all very proud of their wonderful achievement

Midhurst Cup victory for Crablands

The 2023 Midhurst Cup Final this year was played between Crablands and Pagham with Crablands grabbing the Cup.

The final was played on a beautiful afternoon but quite hot and Crablands got into their stride early and strode away never to be caught.

A great afternoon of bowls and a good game for the spectators too, followed by a delicious BBQ tea.

CLUB FINALS WEEKEND

Sep 10th – 11th was the MBC finals weekend with nine championships decided over the two days. Once again the weather was good to us and those spectating enjoyed the close competitive games and the lunch time picnics. The Summer of knockout competitions culminating with our championship finals gave us the following winners. 2022 Jack Smith Trophy

A balmy August Sunday saw a day of mixed triples play run as a league with all points totalled to find the eventual winners. The odd number of entries enabled teams to sit out byes and rest from the heat – gratefully appreciated! The overall winners by just one point were Corina Pearce, Steve Hotston and Colin Downham.

HOLBROOK VICTORY

Midhurst Bowling Club round off the season with a Holbrook Cup Win Midhurst rallied in the last three ends to come from behind and secure a Holbrook Cup victory against Fishbourne. A close fought competition saw Midhurst win by a four point margin at the beautiful host venue of Stedham where spectators were treated to some great close bowling culminating in a 48-44 win. Andy Hiscock, Steve Hotston and Gerald Dixon lost 13-14 Mick Oakley, Catherine Dixon and Paul Chuter won 19-16 Malcolm Hutchins, Annie Chuter and Dave King won 16-14

Queen’s Jubilee Tea in aid of Visually Impaired Bowls England.

What better way to celebrate our Queens Jubilee than lay on a fabulous tea following our Thursday afternoon roll-up. Annie did us proud with a delicious spread of sandwiches, sausage rolls and amazing cakes. Thanks also to Sarah for baking cakes, Pauline for the popular scones and Catherine, Corina, Dot and Di for helping with the preparation and running the bar.

The event proved very popular and £200 was raised as a donation to help fund Mark Bilsby who has been selected to represent England as a Director for Gareth Harwood (B4) at the International Blind Bowls Association World Championships in Australia in March 2023.

Midhurst Bowls Club 2021 Annual Presentation Night

Back on the calendar and highly anticipated the MBC’s annual presentation dinner was well attended by members, family and friends who were treated to a wonderful evening of fabulous food, fun and the highlight of the event, the presentation of awards.

The awards were presented this year by Club Chairman Gerald Dixon and new Club Captain Malcolm Hutchings who has taken on the role from Gerald who held the position for fifteen years.

Following the main awards a few surprised and amused members were presented with the traditional nincompoop cryptic memento by Club Secretary Annie Chuter to recognise and capture their moment of foolishness or perhaps a bubblehead comment on the green. Always very amusing!

MIDHURST BOWLING CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS WEEKEND 2021

The climax of the 2021 Club season was an exciting weekend of quality bowls. The matches were hotly contested over three days and it was encouraging to see new members not only reach but win championship finals. The late Summer sunshine and fast beautifully prepared green made the weekend enjoyable for players and spectators alike.

MIDHURST WIN PETERSFIELD CUP

Following on from our success against Petersfield in the semis, Midhurst Bowling Club were victorious over Alton Bowling Club in the Petersfield Cup Final. Playing in glorious sunshine Midhurst started well on all three rinks and kept up the pressure to win overall by 62 points to 33 and brought home the Cup. Scores Dave King, Richard Softly, Carol Harkness and Mick Oakley 23 – 11 Gerald Dixon, Annie Chuter and Steve Hotston (sub for Andy Hiscock) 11 – 14 Paul Chuter and Catherine Dixon 28 – 8

RON PETTY FISH & CHIP TOURNAMENT

A beautiful summer day was the perfect setting for our popular annual Ron Petty fish and chip tournament.

This year the format was fours, with five teams playing each other to find the top two highest scoring teams, who go forward to play on the club’s final weekend. Well done to everyone taking part and Gerald whose patients and determination, against all odds selected the well-balanced teams.

ROLL - UP COMPETITION

With the relaxing of the COVID rules Midhurst bowling club members take to the greens once more and back by popular demand is the Monday and Thursday roll-up triples tournament. Comprising of teams of three the round robin format gives players the opportunity to play a competition format whilst enjoying the the relaxed informal nature of the roll-up sessions.

Ten teams will battling it out whilst still adhering to the COVID guidelines and practices.

With the Sunshine back so are the friendly matches. Although subject to change due to COVID rules the 2021 fixtures are going ahead.

The Corona Virus could not deter the enthusiasm and banter of the competing players for this keenly contested tournament, sadly the only one played this year. The games were played over seven weeks and were hotly contested and thoroughly enjoyed, whilst all along observing the covid guidelines.

Midhurst Bowling Club 2019 Presentation Night

Held at the Cowdray Golf Club the annual presentation night proved a huge success.

The event was well supported and members enjoyed a lavish evening of good food, plenty of banter and an impromptu and unrestrained cabaret performed by Richard, John and Gerald !

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of trophies to the winners of the Club tournaments held throughout the Summer.
